The man on trial has been found guilty by a judge of the murder of Laken Riley, a Georgia nursing student whose death in February rocked both the nation and the college town where she was a student.

Jose Ibarra, 26, was found guilty on Wednesday morning of Riley’s death-related offenses, including murder. He received a life sentence without the chance of release.

According to officials, Ibarra, an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela, entered the country unlawfully in 2022 but was permitted to stay in order to prosecute his immigration case. President-elect Donald Trump and other prominent Republicans blamed President Biden’s policies for Riley’s murder, which fueled the national debate over border rules earlier this year.

The verdict handed down by Athens-Clarke County Superior Court Judge H. Patrick Haggard marked the end of four days of emotional hearings that began last week. Ibarra waived his right to a jury trial after pleading not guilty to a 10-count indictment brought against him in the wake of Riley’s killing, which meant the case would be heard and decided solely by the judge. He also declined to testify during the trial.

The state had charged Ibarra with one count of malice murder, three counts of felony murder and one count each of kidnapping, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, hindering an emergency telephone call, tampering with evidence, and being a “peeping Tom.” That final charge stemmed from prosecutors’ allegation that Ibarra peered into the window of an apartment in a university residential building on the day Riley was murdered. Prosecutors said he was “hunting for females on the University of Georgia’s campus” when he encountered Riley.

Ibarra was found guilty on all 10 counts. Audible wails were heard in the courtroom when Haggard announced the verdict, citing a portion of the prosecution’s closing argument that emphasized the evidence against Ibarra was “overwhelming and powerful.” The defendant, receiving the news in Spanish through a translator, maintained the stoicism he displayed in court throughout the trial.

Ibarra’s status as an undocumented immigrant became a flashpoint in the heated debate over border security. President-elect Donald Trump and fellow Republicans have pointed to Riley’s murder as proof that President Biden hasn’t done enough to prevent potentially dangerous individuals from crossing the southern border.

Haggard read the verdict and then heard impact comments from Riley’s family. Riley’s parents, sister, roommates, and friends spoke through tears as they characterized her as a happy, aspirational, and giving young woman who prioritized helping others and loved her faith. Riley’s friends stated separately that they now worry about their safety at school after several referred to Ibarra as a monster and the crime as an act of evil. The painful video of the police telling Riley’s family she was dead was also released by the prosecution.

All those who testified urged the judge to give the worst punishment possible. In this instance, the death sentence was not requested by the prosecution.
