James Earl Jones, the renowned theater and film icon who overcame racial prejudice and a terrible stutter to become Darth Vader’s powerful, deep voice actor, has passed away. He was ninety-three.

According to his agent Barry McPherson, Jones passed away at home on Monday morning. It was unclear at first what the cause was.

Jones, who continued to work far into his 80s, received honorary Oscars and special Tony awards for lifetime achievement in addition to winning two Emmys, a Grammy, a Golden Globe, a Tony Award, the National Medal of Arts, and the Kennedy Center Honors. A Broadway theater was renamed in his honor in 2022.

In his later years, he had a fierce work ethic, a wry sense of humor, and an elegant appearance. 2015: Having memorized the play and brought notebooks full of notes from the creative team, he showed up for rehearsals for a Broadway production of The Gin Game. Dr. Strangelove, The Greatest (with Muhammad Ali), Conan the Barbarian, Three Fugitives, and the role of an admiral in three Tom Clancy blockbuster adaptations—Patriot Games, The Hunt for Red October, and Clear and Present Danger—are among his other motion pictures. Jones had a romantic relationship with Diahann Carroll in the infrequent romantic comedy Claudine.

After making his Broadway debut in Sunrise At Campobello in 1958, Jones went on to win two Tony Awards for Fences (1987) and The Great White Hope (1969). In addition, he received nominations for Gore Vidal’s The Best Man (2012) and On Golden Pond (2005). His mastery of both Athol Fugard and Shakespeare was praised.
